The Re-Scape Colloquium on May 18th will be held in Soesterberg (in the framework of the 'Week of the Vacant Building'). The keynote will be given by Dr. Ana Pereira Roders.
As this Re-Scape colloquium takes place in a remarkable heritage location; the former Officer's Casino of the military airbase Soesterberg, built durin the German occupation and later used by KLM, national medical services and American pilots. The airbase is currently in transition from a closed military terrain to an open leisure landscape.
We seize the opportunity to address an important question that every PhD toys with can hardly be answered from a lecture room: how do I make field observations in heritage research? The former military landscape around the airbase Soesterberg is a perfect setting for an interactive field exploration that focusses on how to 'read a landscape'', how to ask new questions based on your observations and how to include them in your research. Led by Professor Jos Bazelmans - an expert in the layered history of this region - we will explore the landscape and our ways of observing it as academic researchers.
Program:
14.00 Keynote by Ana Pereira Roders (TUe) at the former Officer's Casino (Kampweg 1, Soesterberg)
15.00 Soesterberg excursion by bike led by Jos Bazelmans (RCE, VU)
The fieldwork of the day will require a bicycle. You can rent an OV-fiets at the nearest train station (just register for that service through ns.nl). The alternative is to rent a bike from the local bicycle shop (close to the bus stop), where you can pick it up before the programme starts. Costs are 5 euros per bicycle.
