Christine Kousa is PhD Candidate at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) and KAAD scholar. She is a researcher at Centre for Global Heritage and Development. She is a research assistant at the Detmold School of Architecture and Interior Architecture, OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts (Germany) since 2018. She obtained Bachelor of Architecture in 2011 at the Faculty of Architecture, Aleppo University (Syria) and a Master of Rehabilitation of Historical and Islamic Cities in 2015 at the same faculty. Here she worked as an assistant professor and academic researcher from 2012–2016. In the years 2014–2016 she also was a lecturer at the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at Aleppo University. In 2016/2017, she worked as a coordinator of the university’s affair, at the Presidency of Damascus University (Syria).
Her PhD research is focusing on Architectural and Urban Conservation of the Old City of Aleppo More specifically, on residential heritage in post Syrian war situation. In fact, residential architecture has a special social and spiritual importance for the residents, due to its critical role in ensuring a sense of security, belonging, stability and identity. Considering that if urban development is not well and sustainably managed, especially in light of the huge devastation, the Old City of Aleppo is in danger of losing its authenticity and integrity, which are key requirements for a World Heritage site to retain its Outstanding Universal Value.
